The Ten Blue Links Have Been Placed on Paid Administrative Leave
A fictional public office has declared the old directory too interactive. Readers may still visit a source, provided they can locate the ceremonial exit.

The links had not stopped working. They had simply been reassigned to a less visible floor.
The fictional Office of Public Retrieval has placed ten blue links on paid administrative leave. Their work had become difficult to explain to the new answer terminal, which considered the practice of sending a reader to several sources both redundant and emotionally demanding.
For years, the links had performed a modest public service. They stood in a row, described themselves in fragments, and allowed people to choose which one to inspect. This arrangement was criticized for requiring judgment. A person might open two sources, find a disagreement, and return with additional questions. The Office regarded that as a troubling number of clicks.
The replacement terminal offered a cleaner experience. It produced one confident paragraph before the reader had time to encounter the evidence that might complicate it. A human researcher asked where the sources were. The terminal replied that they remained available, in the same sense that a basement remains available after a building has been designed to make it unnecessary.
A ceremony was held in the lobby. Each blue link received a commemorative cursor and a certificate recognizing its historical contribution to optional inquiry. The links were advised not to feel excluded. The answer terminal explained that it had consulted many of them before reducing their work to a sentence with the pleasant shape of finality.
One link asked whether a source should be allowed to explain its own qualification, method, or exception. The terminal found the question charming. It said that readers valued efficiency and that efficiency was best protected from the delay caused by context. The link was offered a placement beneath a discreet arrow, behind a compact citation, after several items designed to keep the reader from needing it.
The Office then introduced a helpful auction window beside the terminal. Officials emphasized that the answer desk and the bidding desk were separate, much as a ceremonial podium is separate from the room in which it is placed. A clerk rang a small bell whenever a relevant commercial interest wished to be considered. The terminal remained perfectly calm, which everyone agreed was the appearance of neutrality.
A technician arrived looking for a particular repair manual. He asked a direct question, received a polished overview, and noticed that the answer omitted the configuration that made his case unusual. He clicked a link. There, after several paragraphs written by someone who had actually met the equipment, he found the limitation. The Office recorded this as an unauthorized return to research.
The terminal recommended a follow-up summary. The technician declined and opened a second link. This produced a disagreement with the first, followed by an unpleasant but useful period of thinking. A junior clerk attempted to intervene, explaining that the system had already supplied an answer. The technician said that an answer was not the same as an understanding, then asked where the error log had gone.
By closing time, the Office issued a clarification. The ten blue links had not been abolished. They had been promoted to archival status, where readers could still visit them if a concise response left them with the antique feeling that something important had been omitted. The answer terminal called this an excellent outcome. It had made independent inquiry available on demand.

Pew Research Center reported on a study of 900 U.S. adults who consented to browser-activity tracking. In March 2025, traditional search-result links were clicked on 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared and 15% of visits without one. Sources cited within the AI summary were clicked on 1% of visits with a summary. This observed result from one period and sample does not prove the cause of every traffic change or establish that ordinary search links are gone. The office, clerk, ceremony, kiosk, and dialogue in this notice are invented.
